CREATING COMPANY CONGRUENCE

Every office has one. The employee who refuses to train another. Or they refuse to learn a task outside their job description. They aren't acting in harmony with the company's goals. They are incongruent because they may feel if someone else can do their job, they will get fired.  Or maybe they're afraid they won't be a good trainer. Whatever the reason, you need to address it.

Call a staff meeting. Tell them why they need to train others and why they need to learn new duties.  Give them both the carrot and the stick. The carrot being:

They are more valuable when they are proficient in several tasks.

  • There would be less down time, making the company more profitable (read:  more money for salaries).
  • When people collaborate, their combined effort makes the procedures for each job more complete and succinct.
  • When they are absent, they can be secure in the knowledge there is someone who knows how to do the job so they won't have to play "catch-up" when they return.

There are many other intangibles that come into play as well - trust, "team effort" mentality, more company loyalty.

The stick is simple:  Do it or we will find someone who will.

When you have compliance throughout your entire company, you are well on your way to a more profitably-run business.
